Garden spiders
The common UK Garden Spider, also known as the Cross Spider because of the distinctive marks on its back. Garden spiders are orb web weavers so operate above ground, making their webs in many locations both urban and rural. In September and October of most years there is an invasion of these spiders in most towns and countrysides across the UK. They appear in their hundreds in gardens and urban areas. They casting their large webs across roads and pathways, hoping to catch unsuspecting flies and insects in their nets but usually catching big fat humans instead.
