Wolf Spiders

Wolf spiders are members of the family of spiders called Lycosidae in latin, meaning wolf. This name is attributed to them because they are fast, ground dwelling hunter-predators preying on other insects. Though rather than hunt in packs like many wolves, they are opportunistic lone-wolf hunters.

The Lycosidae family is large and diverse featuring many different shapes and sizes of spider dispersed across the whole world. The smaller species tend to be found in Europe, while the large, more dangerous, species can be found in the America’s and Australia.

Larger wolf spiders can and will bite humans if provoked and, although painful, the venomous bite is not thought to be life threatening.
