Long Brown Cylindroiulus Millipede
Given its appearance and location in England, i’m quite confident this critter is from the Cylindroiulus genus of the Julidae family of millipedes, though I am not sure of the exact species – there are a massive amount of species of millipedes in general and in this genus in particular. But
Millipedes are a type of arthropod and therefore have an exoskeleton. They a usually characterised by having a very long, thin body and many legs – “millipede” derives from “a thousand legs” in Latin. They are among the oldest land-based animals on earth having he lived here since the silurian period 444 million years ago. Back in prehistoric times there were millipede species that grew over 2 metres in length but in modern times the largest is the Giant African Millipede, which grows up to 38 centimetres in length. Millipedes are herbivorous as apposed to their carnivorous and venomous cousins, centipedes.
