Thanks to help from wikipedia I eventually found out this little bird was a juvenile Erithacus Rubecula Melophilus or Robin having originally thought it was a young black bird. Boy or girl – who knows? As it gets older, it will get the trademark red chest. It was quite a fearless (or is that inexperienced?) little bird. I was walking along the Medway River in Kent and it was bobbing along the grass verge. It then fluttered onto a branch about 10 ft away. I expected it to fly off but then it came even closer – about 6 ft away – looked around for a few seconds, then flying off.
